US union opposes driverless trucks waiver for Waymo, Aurora – Reuters

by admin

30-second summary:
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has opposed Waymo and Aurora’s bid to exempt themselves from a federal law requiring drivers in commercial motor vehicles. The companies have requested to deploy up to 100 autonomous trucks without the need for a human driver behind the wheel. In a letter to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the union stated that the exemption could “put countless lives at risk.” The request is currently under review, and the teamsters have urged regulators to deny it. The exemption would allow Waymo and Aurora to operate commercial driverless trucks by 2023.
